“It’s only two microphones and some background music. We don’t really need a soundcheck, do we?”
Yes.
In fact, simple events are often where people skip the process that would have prevented the embarrassing problem later.
A proper soundcheck is not a rehearsal for the sake of making noise. It is a systems test under realistic conditions.
It answers questions that cannot be answered by looking at a powered-up mixer:
- Is every input routed to the right place?
- Is the gain structure healthy?
- Is there enough level before feedback?
- Are the microphones the right choice and in the right positions?
- Are the monitors usable without fighting the main PA?
- Is the wireless system stable across the stage?
- Are the subs, tops and fills aligned?
- Does the room have acoustic problems that need correction?
- Are playback devices actually producing the expected level and format?
- Are show cues, mute groups, scenes and emergency routes correct?
The answer you want to discover at 4 pm is very different from the answer you discover at 8:05 pm with 300 people watching.
Line check and soundcheck are not the same thing
These two get confused constantly.
A line check asks: “Does signal exist?”
You confirm:
- Microphone is connected
- DI box works
- Instrument input arrives
- Playback device is routed
- Stage box channel is correct
- Left/right outputs reach the PA
A line check is essentially continuity and routing verification.
A soundcheck asks: “Does the system work musically and operationally?”
Now you set:
- Input gain
- EQ
- Compression where required
- High-pass filters
- Monitor/IEM mixes
- Effects
- Main-system level
- Feedback margin
- Balance between sources
- Show scenes and muting
You need both.
A signal can be present and still be unusable.
Why gain structure has to be tested with the actual performer
One of the easiest ways to create a bad mix is to set preamp gain from a technician saying “one, two” quietly into a microphone and assume the singer will behave the same way.
They will not.
A vocalist performing properly may produce far more level than a casual check. A presenter may hold the mic 30 cm away. A pastor may speak softly and then suddenly become very dynamic. A DJ may deliver a playback feed that is 15 dB hotter than the laptop used during setup.
Soundcheck gives you a realistic source level.
The process is simple:
- Performer uses normal show technique
- Set preamp gain so peaks are healthy but not clipping
- Engage high-pass filtering where appropriate
- Apply corrective EQ only after the source is positioned correctly
- Add compression if it improves consistency rather than hiding poor technique
- Set channel level in context with the rest of the mix
If the preamp is wrong at the beginning, everything downstream becomes harder.
Feedback is a geometry problem before it is an EQ problem
Feedback happens when a microphone hears enough of the amplified version of itself to create a loop.
The loop includes:
microphone → mixer → amplifier/PA → room → microphone
You can improve feedback margin with EQ, but speaker placement and microphone technique come first.
During soundcheck you can identify:
- A wedge pointing directly into the most sensitive part of a microphone pattern
- A lectern microphone too far from the speaker's mouth
- Main PA coverage spilling back onto stage
- Vocalist cupping the microphone grille and changing its polar behaviour
- Too much monitor level because stage amps are too loud
- Frequencies that ring because of room modes or speaker/room interaction
Trying to solve all of that with aggressive graphic EQ usually makes the system dull and weak.
Ringing out the system
For speech-heavy systems and wedges, engineers often increase level toward the onset of feedback, identify the dominant frequency, reduce it carefully with a narrow EQ filter, and repeat as required.
The objective is not to flatten the entire system into submission.
It is to gain a few useful decibels of stability without destroying tone.
Soundcheck is the safe time to do it.
The room is part of the PA
An empty venue and a full venue do not sound identical.
People absorb sound, particularly in the upper-mid and high-frequency region. Tables, curtains, drapes, seats and temporary staging also change reflections.
That means soundcheck is not a perfect prediction of the finished room — but it gives the engineer a reference.
Without one, there is no baseline at all.
What the engineer is listening for around the room
A good system check involves leaving the console position and walking the audience area.
We are looking for:
- Dead spots
- Excessive overlap between speakers
- Harsh zones close to the mains
- Bass build-up against walls or corners
- Missing coverage under balconies
- Excessive rear-wall reflections
- Delay speakers that are too early or late
- Left/right imbalance caused by room geometry
If the entire soundcheck happens behind the mixing desk, half the venue may remain unknown.
Monitors are often the real reason soundcheck takes time
Front-of-house may sound great while the stage is unusable.
Performers need to hear themselves and the right combination of other sources.
For wedge monitors, each mix has to balance useful level against feedback and stage spill.
For in-ear monitors, the challenge changes to:
- Correct routing
- Safe output level
- Stereo/mono configuration
- Individual mix balance
- Ambient/room information where needed
- RF coordination if IEM systems are wireless
A band with six monitor mixes is not “one PA.” It is seven mixes: six on stage plus the main audience mix.
That is why a full-band soundcheck can take time even when the equipment is already connected.
Digital mixers make preparation faster — not unnecessary
Modern digital consoles allow:
- Saved scenes
- Channel presets
- Recallable EQ/dynamics
- DCA/VCA groups
- Mute groups
- Digital stage boxes
- Remote tablet control
- Multitrack virtual soundcheck on some workflows
This can reduce setup time enormously.
But recall is only useful when the physical system matches the saved assumptions.
If the vocal mic changed, the PA moved, the room changed or the backline is different, yesterday's scene is a starting point — not proof that today's event is ready.
Save after the soundcheck
Once the system is stable:
- Save the show scene
- Save a backup copy
- Record critical patch information
- Lock or safe channels that should not change between scenes
- Confirm mute states before doors open
A saved scene is cheap insurance against accidental console changes.
Wireless microphones must be checked with movement
A stationary wireless mic sitting next to the receiver tells you almost nothing about show reliability.
During soundcheck:
- Walk the stage
- Walk aisles if the presenter will enter the audience
- Turn toward and away from receiver antennas
- Test behind set pieces or LED screens where relevant
- Confirm batteries
- Scan frequencies at the venue
If a dropout exists, you want to find the exact physical location before the event starts.
Playback is another common failure point
“Just play this video from the laptop” can fail in several ways:
- HDMI audio routes to the wrong device
- Laptop notification sounds appear in the PA
- Playback level is radically different from microphone level
- Stereo track is accidentally summed badly to mono
- Adapter is noisy or intermittent
- Video file uses an unsupported codec
- Internet-based media buffers
- Laptop sleeps or changes output device
Test the exact content before the audience arrives.
For event-critical playback, keep local copies and a backup device where possible.
DJ handover needs soundcheck too
If a DJ is plugging into a venue system, the venue engineer needs to know:
- Master output type
- Nominal output level
- Whether DJ mixer/controller is balanced or unbalanced
- Whether the DJ will control level or hand fixed level to FOH
- Where system limiting occurs
- Whether booth monitors are required
- Whether the DJ has a microphone
A common failure is double gain staging: the DJ runs master into the red, FOH turns the input down, then the DJ pushes harder because the room feels quiet.
Set an agreed reference level during soundcheck.
For example: DJ master around a known clean operating point, FOH channel set for required system level, limiters protecting the PA.
Then both sides leave the relationship alone.
Subwoofer alignment is not something to guess mid-show
When tops and subs overlap around the crossover region, timing and polarity matter.
Poor alignment can create a cancellation zone where the system should have maximum punch.
Soundcheck/system commissioning lets the engineer verify:
- Crossover frequency
- Polarity
- Delay between subs and tops
- Physical placement
- DSP presets
- Limiter settings
This may be done by measurement, manufacturer presets or a combination depending on the system.
The audience experiences it as one thing: does the PA hit properly or not?
Delay speakers have to be timed
A speaker halfway down a long room should not simply receive the same signal with no delay.
If the delayed speaker reaches the listener before or significantly out of time with the main PA, you hear smearing or a distinct echo.
As a rough physical reference, sound travels around 343 metres per second at room temperature — roughly 2.9 milliseconds per metre.
That means a fill speaker 10 metres farther toward the audience than the main source may need around 29 ms of delay before fine alignment.
Exact settings depend on geometry and measurement.
Again: soundcheck.
What a professional soundcheck sequence looks like
The exact workflow changes by engineer, but this is a practical order.
1. System power and signal-path check
Confirm:
- Power distribution
- Mixer and stage box networking
- DSP/amplifier status
- Speaker outputs
- No unexpected protect/limiter faults
2. Verify the patch
Every source reaches the expected channel.
3. Set source gains
Actual performers at realistic level.
4. Build monitor mixes
Get performers comfortable before trying to perfect FOH.
5. Build the main mix
Balance sources and apply processing.
6. Check feedback margin
Especially speech mics and wedges.
7. Walk the room
Verify coverage and system alignment.
8. Check wireless movement
Walk-test all critical wireless channels.
9. Run show cues
Playback, stings, videos, walk-on music, mute groups, scenes.
10. Save everything
Save the show file and note anything the operator needs to know.
“But the event is simple”
Simple is exactly when a 15-minute check is cheap.
For two microphones and a laptop, you may not need a full band-style hour-long soundcheck.
You still need to confirm:
- Both microphones are stable and intelligible
- Gain is correct
- Feedback margin is safe
- Laptop audio reaches both channels correctly
- Playback level matches the room
- Backup route exists
The objective is proportional preparation, not unnecessary theatre.
The business reason soundcheck matters
From an event company or venue perspective, soundcheck reduces risk.
It protects against:
- Client complaints
- Delayed event starts
- Damaged speakers from uncontrolled levels
- Presenter embarrassment
- Band frustration
- Refund demands
- Technician overtime
- Reputation damage
A soundcheck costs time before the event.
No soundcheck can cost the event.
